Reddit Just Broke the GEO Playbook

August 26, 2026

What an 86% citation collapse tells us about the danger of chasing today's algorithm.

Welcome to this week's Takumi AI Brief.

For the past year, one piece of GEO advice got repeated everywhere.

Get your brand onto Reddit.

There was logic to it.

Reddit had become one of the most cited sources inside AI answers.

Brands noticed. Agencies noticed. Everyone started trying to engineer their way in.

Then ChatGPT changed the rules.

01 · The Trend That Actually Matters

According to Promptwatch data reported by Axios, Reddit accounted for an average 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations between July 18 and August 7.

By August 14, that had fallen below 1%.

Its new average, 0.52%.

An 86% drop.

Reddit didn't become irrelevant overnight.

Millions of conversations didn't disappear.

Consumers didn't stop using it.

The machine simply changed what it chose to trust.

One caveat worth naming honestly.

Promptwatch itself says the exact cause isn't proven. A change in ChatGPT's source selection looks like the obvious explanation, but measurement issues haven't been fully ruled out either.

And the drop wasn't uniform.

Promptwatch found much smaller falls in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Which makes the real story more interesting than the headline number.

There is no single algorithm to optimise for.

02 · The AI Shift to Watch

For months, GEO has been drifting toward an uncomfortable version of early SEO.

Find the sources AI likes.

Get mentioned there.

Repeat.

Reddit became the obvious target because AI models seemed to value real human discussion. So brands and agencies started targeting those conversations specifically, hoping to shape what AI would later say about them.

Probably inevitable.

SEO created link farms.

Social created engagement farms.

GEO was starting to create authority farms.

But AI search has one trait that makes this particular game much harder to win.

The rules can move fast, without warning, and without an update log.

Google trained marketers to think in algorithm updates.

AI platforms are forcing us to think in algorithmic volatility.

A source with outsized influence today can carry a fraction of that tomorrow.

A prompt that surfaces your brand this month may surface a competitor next month.

A tactic that looks like best practice can become yesterday's hack within weeks.

Call this the Authority Half-Life problem.

Every source AI currently trusts has a shelf life nobody can predict in advance. The brands over-indexed on one source are the ones with the most to lose when it expires.

03 · If I Were in the CMO Chair

I wouldn't stop investing in Reddit.

I would stop treating Reddit as a GEO tactic.

Those are two very different decisions.

Reddit still matters, real consumers discuss real products there, and those conversations create signals that travel well beyond the platform itself.

But betting an entire AI visibility strategy on one platform, one source type, or one model's current citation behaviour is fragile by design.

I'd want my team answering one question honestly.

How difficult would it be for AI to understand our brand as authoritative if Reddit disappeared tomorrow?

If the honest answer is "very difficult," that's not a Reddit problem. That's an authority problem.

→ Your own site needs to explain your expertise clearly enough for machines to parse it

→ Independent publishers need to validate what you claim about yourself

→ Communities need to discuss you without being told to

→ Structured data needs to make your business legible to a model, not just a person

→ The whole system needs continuous monitoring, because the models deciding what matters are changing underneath you, quietly, all the time

That is a completely different posture than "let's post on Reddit because ChatGPT likes Reddit this month."

The CMO Takeaway

The real lesson from Reddit's collapse isn't about Reddit.

It's about how young GEO still is.

Marketers want a playbook. We had one for SEO. One for paid search. One for social.

Eventually, clearer patterns will emerge for AI visibility too.

Until then, any agency promising you a fixed GEO formula should make you nervous.

An 86% shift in one of the most influential sources on the internet happened in a matter of days.

The goal was never to optimise for what the machine happens to like today.

It's to build authority strong enough to survive the next time the machine changes its mind.
